Sweater Shop

Style Overview

The sweater you love most never really makes it back to the drawer... it lives on the back of a kitchen chair, waiting! Our cozy sweaters for women are made for exactly that spot, with open cardigans in happy stripes, soft pullovers and cropped knits finished with embroidery, tassels or colorful trim. Fits stay relaxed and roomy. Layer one over our everyday boho tops, or pull it over anything from our boho clothing shop and getting dressed is basically done.

Necklines & Layering

The neckline decides how a sweater plays with everything else you own. A crewneck sits high and simple, so it's the easiest one to wear over a collared shirt with a crisp bit of white at the top. A V-neck opens things up and gives your favorite necklace somewhere to land.

A mock or funnel neck keeps the wind off without a scarf, and we love that on a long, cold walk to see the neighborhood holiday lights. Open fronts are their own thing entirely. A cardigan has a frame instead of a neckline, so whatever sits underneath becomes the story!

Underneath, keep it thin. A fitted tee or smooth tank from the tees and tanks we layer under everything keeps the knit sitting right, with no bunching at the sleeves. Under a cropped style, an extra inch of color peeking out at the hem looks completely on purpose.

Save the bulky stuff for on top, like a denim jacket over a lightweight knit on a windy afternoon. Here's to a layer you can peel off when the fireplace kicks in!

To Tuck or Not to Tuck

A front tuck is the little move that changes a sweater the most. Take the center few inches of the hem, push them into your waistband and leave the rest loose. It shows off a fun belt, gives a slouchy knit a bit of shape and takes about two seconds.

Go for a full tuck when the knit is fine enough to disappear into your waistband and you want the outfit to feel a little more finished. A thin pullover tucked into wide-leg trousers with boots is one of our favorite Thanksgiving outfits. Chunky treasures usually fight a full tuck, so let those hang.

Untucked isn't a fallback, it's a choice! A long cardigan left open over leggings is one of the great cold-weather uniforms, and an oversized pullover worn loose over our boho skirts and pants has an ease we come back to constantly. Cropped designs answer the question on their own, since they end right at the waistband.

Pairing with Bottoms

Denim is the obvious answer and still the right one most days. High-waisted jeans under a cropped knit are a match made for fall, and straight-leg jeans with a slouchy pullover is about as easy as getting dressed gets. Dark denim under a bright striped cardigan lets the stripes do all the talking.

Skirts are where a sweater gets more interesting. A chunky pullover over a long flowy skirt is a combo we look forward to every single autumn, warm on top and swishy below. A denim mini with tights and a cardigan carries you right through winter break.

Then there are boots, which change everything above them. Tall boots with a midi skirt and a fine knit feel polished without any effort, while cowboy boots under a striped cardigan land squarely in the boots-and-fringe world of our vintage western shop. Leggings deserve credit too, especially under a long open cardigan on the days when comfort wins outright.

Our Sweater Shop

Our Sweater Shop gathers the open cardigans, soft pullovers and cropped layers we wear from the first chilly morning through early spring, in colorful stripes and embroidered details that make getting dressed fun. We made every one to be the layer you grab without thinking, the one that lives by the door!

FAQs

How should I pick my sweater size?

Most of our knits are cut relaxed and roomy, so your usual size gives you the fit we intended. Check the measurements and fit notes on each product page, since a cropped style and a roomy pullover wear very differently. If you love extra slouch or plan to put a long-sleeve layer underneath, sizing up gives you room to play.

How do I wash and store my sweaters?

Check the care label first, since finishes vary from one design to the next. As a general rule, machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water and tumble dry on low. Turn anything with embroidery or tassels inside out to protect the details. Fold your knits for storage instead of hanging them, so the shoulders keep their shape.

Where can I wear a sweater besides the couch?

Just about anywhere! A fine knit with trousers and boots handles the office, dinner out and the school holiday concert without a second thought. A cardigan over a tee is the standard uniform for weekend errands and apple picking. For the holiday party, a colorful pullover and a great pair of earrings will get you there happily.

Do sweaters make a good gift?

Yes, and a knit is easier to get right than most clothing, because relaxed shapes don't hinge on an exact size. We reach for cardigans when she's hard to shop for: a teacher, a new neighbor, the friend who's chilly in every restaurant. Add a little somethin' from our coziest little gifts and the whole bundle becomes a warm little treasure to unwrap.

Can I wear a sweater in warmer months?

Absolutely! A lightweight cardigan earns its keep all year, in over-air-conditioned offices, on breezy spring evenings and through chilly movie theaters. Toss one over our flowy dresses and jumpsuits and your favorite dress keeps working long after the sun goes down. Save the chunky treasures for real cold and let the light ones travel with you.
